JAB WE MET!
It was a pleasing morning, the atmosphere around was absolutely charming… we headed towards Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary early in the morning from our residence at Nagpur. This was the time when, there were no such modern means of livelihood available at Nagzira. No TVs, no range to Mobile phones, no lights as well.
My family has always been crazy about jungles and wildlife… I was few months child since, my family took me on safaris to the ultimate wildlife hotspots… while, I was quite fortunate in terms of the location of my residence…. I stayed in Nagpur which had an amazing connectivity to the jungles like Tadoba, Nagzira, Navegaon Bandh, Pench and many more…
It had been the practice of our family, to spend the weekend either at Nagzira or Tadoba… and I was fond of it!
I neither remember the date nor day nor the year… but, the incidence was too exciting for me as a small child. We were back from our evening safari and were having some fun family time. I and my cousin sister were busy playing in the veranda of our room and our parents too were there around us! There were no electric lights, but the fire lamps around, so the visibility was quite low.
Suddenly, we heard lots of callings of Sambar deer, who was probably near the water hole situated just to opposite our campsite. Our curious eyes began to peep in the direction of that calling, but couldn’t sight anything due to low visibility. A few minutes later, one of the forest officials came towards us with a lamp in hand and said, “Get inside your rooms fast, there’s a leopard out there.”
As a small kid, you aren’t scared of the animals, at least in regards to me; I found tigers and leopards to be same as of a pet dog or cat at my home. I found them, animals of a different habitat. And that’s it.
Well! My family members were too not scared of them; this might be because their constant visits to the forest and participating voluntarily in the Tiger Census. Though my mom and aunt just rushed inside the rooms and locked themselves and started shouting on us to get in too. We the brave Cubs were wandering out with our brave Tiger dads, in search of the leopard. I had the torch in my hand and was excited to catch the Leopard n its light. Unexpectedly, my dad sighted a sort of twinkle in the bushes out there. Yes, you guess it right! It was neither a twinkling star, nor a fire fly, but the shinning eyes of the leopard!
At this moment, I did scare… but, the excitement and surprising feeling took over the scariness. The shinning eyes, stunning physics and the charming eye sight of the leopard added spice to my first meet with it! This was for the first ever time, I sighted a leopard that too at such a close distance as far as I remember. And this was definitely a wow moment of my life….
